ISO 7206-12 Scope and requirements
ISO 7206-12 Implants for surgery – Partial and total hip-joint prostheses - Part 12: Deformation test method for acetabular shells
- Press-fit fixation is a common method used for implanting non-cemented acetabular components. Primary fixation is achieved between the acetabular shell and the reamed acetabular base. Different diameters lead to a certain amount of pressure between the bone and the acetabular component, which in turn leads to deformation. This deformation can affect the lubrication and friction properties of the articulating surfaces, potentially resulting in higher wear rates and premature failure of the hip joint implant.
- The ISO 7206-12 standard therefore specifies a test method and the test conditions for determining short-term deformation of a press-fit acetabular component. The test method is used to differentiate between various designs and materials.
